Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway
Sleds on the Grand Mesa Scenic Byway

Like to snowmobile? Travel along Colorado's Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway during the winter and find miles of groomed snowmobile trails to sink your sled into. Snow blankets the mesa in the winter, offering many play areas where you can catch majestic views of one of the largest flat-topped mountains in the world as well as other places of natural beauty and wonder, such as Dry Mesa Dinosaur Quarry, Bridal Veil Falls, and more than 300 lakes. The mesa is covered with these lakes, and in the wintertime, their icy, tree-surrounded expanses are a beauty to behold. You won't want to miss anything, so pack up your snowmobile and head out on an exceptional winter excursion.

As you travel the byway, stop first at the Powderhorn Ski Area to ride the brightest snowmobiling jewel in the area: the Sunlight to Powderhorn Trail (the SP Trail.) This 120-mile trail is the backbone of more than 180 miles of groomed and un-groomed snowmobiling trails through the Grand Mesa and nearby White River National Forests. The trail skirts wilderness areas where snowmobiles are not allowed, so check your trail maps carefully before you go. Be sure to bring your camera and sunglasses to fully experience the forest as you whip through the snow-covered trees on your sled.

Another way to explore Grand Mesa and Colorado's longest multi-use winter recreational trail is to take a snowmobiling tour. Sunlight Mountain Ski Resort, not far from the eastern end of the byway, offers several guided tours. Their Tri-County Point Tour is about 16 miles long and includes incredible views of Pitkin, Mesa, and Garfield Counties from Tri-County Point. Take another of the resort's guided tours along the Sunlight to Powderhorn Trail, the Baylor Park Adventure Ride, and afterward play in Baylor Park. Baylor Park is a huge meadow, so everyone will have a chance to get covered in snow!

Whether you ride your sled to places undiscovered, play in the snow or take a guided tour, remember -- safety first! Your next snowmobiling adventures is beckoning to you. Speed along the Sunlight to Powderhorn Trail System, and discover that wintertime is the perfect time to experience the beauties of the amazing, elevated, Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway.
